P2OA: The Pyrenean Platform for Atmospheric Observations

The Observatoire Midi-PyrĂ©nĂ©es has two sites in the Hautes-PyrĂ©nĂ©es dedicated to atmospheric experimentation and observation: the Centre de Recherches AtmosphĂ©riques (CRA), located near Lannemezan at 600 meters above sea level, and the Pic du Midi (PDM)28 km away, at 2,877 meters above sea level. Thanks to the scientific and technical staff, infrastructure, and hosting capabilities of these two sites, observations in meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, and atmospheric electricity have been conducted there for several decades.

The P2OA platform has three main missions:

  • Continuous observation of atmospheric parameters
  • Hosting experimental campaigns
  • Field training

Beyond the observations and experiments conducted independently at each site due to their unique capabilities, the geographical configuration of the sites enables—through coordinated measurements—the specific study of air mass and atmospheric constituent exchanges between the plains and mountains, or between the boundary layer and the free troposphere.
