Having an impact on regional climate and numerical weather prediction.
The MAP-IO program operates as an observatory with three main objectives:
- Producing and archiving data for studies on atmospheric, oceanographic processes, and exchanges at the air-sea interface,
- Validating and calibrating satellite sensors and numerical weather prediction models,
- Monitoring global changes in the Indian and Southern Oceans.
This scientific program relies on the archiving of oceanic and atmospheric data by equipping the Marion Dufresne vessel with 19 permanent and autonomous atmospheric measurement systems.
MAP-IO has been endorsed by the French National Commission for the High-Seas Fleet since 2020 and has recently been designated as a CNRS National Instrument for the period 2025–2030.

The program is coordinated by Pierre Tulet (LAERO/OMP) and Joanna Kolasinski (ENTROPIE/OSU-R).
